Maualaivao Albert Wendt is one of Samoa’s, New Zealand’s, and the Pacific’s foremost writers and academics. He has published numerous novels, collections of poetry and short stories, and edited several notable anthologies of Pacific writing. His work has been translated into many languages and taught around the world. He has taught at all educational levels. And through his teaching and writing has changed how we perceive the Pacific and ourselves. He has been awarded many literary prizes and honours. In 2012 he was awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in Fiction, and in 2013, our country’s highest honour, the Order of New Zealand. In 2018 he was made a recipient of the Icon Award by The Arts Foundation. He is Emeritus Professor of English at Auckland University, and lives with his partner Reina Whaitiri in Ponsonby, Auckland, and continues to write and paint fulltime. They have ten mokopuna.
